In this issue of “The Monitor,” you’ll find updates on some programs we started last month, as well as some very important information regarding the next month, and conclusion of the Spring semester. Additionally, I’ve changed the plan for this mailer (as you may have noticed), and from now on it will be mailed on the first of the month, rather than bi-weekly. If you have a submission for the “May 1st, Monitor” please email me by April 29th, to make sure your contribution gets in. Make sure you save this email for the important due dates of some of the upcoming events.

Ithaca College Television sponsored four sessions at the spring conference of College Media Advisers in New York City March 20-22. I went to welcome the guest speakers, who volunteered their time to speak with students and advisers, and meet with other advisers. The conference is mostly for print journalists (seven Ithacan staffers attended, with Michael Serino), but a few of us in radio and TV are trying to build the conference with enough sessions to also interest students working in electronic media. Our speakers:
The conference issued one award for television journalism, the Apple
Award, and that was won by our very own Newswatch 16!
Winning entry was the November 14, 2002 newscast. Congratulations to everyone
on news. ICTV’s most recent awards are in a display cabinet on the
second floor. We hope to have a few more this year, for you to include
on your resume.

Event Begins
Death Tape Due
Senior Tape |
Well, it’s that time again... “Just Desserts” is right around the corner. For those of you who have never attended “Just Desserts” or heard about it, “Just Desserts” is the annual Television & Radio Awards presentation. Every year, we work with members from the radio staffs (106.VIC and 92.WICB) to put together a big event celebrating the accomplishments of the hard working student volunteers. Pastries, cookies, cake, and coffee (i.e. we will have “Just Desserts” to eat... get it?) will all be served as part of the event. Everything is free and open to all participants, and will be held this year on April 22nd, in Emerson Suites. With that said, this year’s “Just Desserts” has run into some difficulties. For those you who know, an April 22nd date is about a week earlier than normal, and has got those of us who are planning it scrambling get everything ready. Additionally, the 22nd falls right in the middle of the Jewish holiday, Passover, so all those observing this holiday will not be able to eat any leavened bread-type foods (i.e. no cakes, cookies, etc. - for more information see Charlton Heston’s ‘The Ten Commandments’). It’s also before our final air night, which means that shows that tape on Tuesday nights will either have to cancel their show, or not attend the event. And of course Earth Day. Anyway, while we do have this myriad of problems, Eloise and I are in contact with Conference and Event Services and will hopefully be able to push it back a week or so. But as for now, we will proceed as normal, with the intention that it will in fact take place on April 22nd, with or without the inconveniences. On a positive side, however, we are planning on making this year’s presentation bigger and better than last years. But to do that we need your help! Here’s what you can/will do to help out: Death Tape. Our annual ‘blooper’ reel, filled
with humorous mistakes, errors, and surprises, to celebrate how far we’ve
come, and what the problem’s we’ve had getting there. The
classic “Cayle-falling-down-in-the-fountain”
will NOT be airing this year in Death Tape, so make sure
your clips are extra hilarious to make up for it. Compile on a DV-Tape,
a group of clips (do not edit them, leave 5 seconds before and after the
moment happens), that are clearly funny to any audience, not just your
crew. Senior Tape. Parting is such sweet sorrow, and so on.
Our compilation of senior ICTV and Radio students, saying their final
fair-wells to Ithaca and their friends. Encourage all seniors to come
down to the Studio B* for a few moments, on April
12th* to participate in the Senior Tape. Band-Aid. Last year’s event was extremely enjoyable because the “Live On Tape” band was there to musically intro- and outro- all guests and awards. Unfortunatly, they’re in Los Angeles at the moment, so we’re looking for a new band to help out. If you know of anybody willing to do it, please pass along my name and email, and I will be happy to give them a shot. Rock the Vote. What would an awards show be, without awards? In the next few weeks, we will be nominating, and then voting on, the recipients of the ICTV Awards. The following is our standard list of awards, so start thinking about who you feel deserves these honors:
That’s about everything I have for you at this time. In the next few weeks, you’ll be receiving more information on how to vote on the awards, and reminders about tape submissions. Please encourage your crews to attend the event, as it is always a lot of fun and a great chance to see everyone outside of the studio setting. Plus, there’s free desserts, so what more could you ask for?!

With upcoming prospective students visiting our college for "Ithaca Today," ICTV has the great opportunity to publicize to those students and families that joining our shows are a great way to gain experience, and have a good time. Because I will be doing President Host Tours, I am looking for a couple of volunteers for this Saturday, April 5, to run an ICTV booth and hand out flyers about our organization. You could receive questions from upcoming freshmen and transfers, so be ready to represent ICTV the best you can! If you decide to help, you would probably have to come in around 8:00am and setup. The actual fair will run from 8:30-10:30am. If you would like to help or have any questions, please email me at arowe2@ithaca.edu. You can also IM me on my personal S/N: SKAUTOBOT. Hope to hear from you in the next couple of days!

I want to start off by saying I think everybody has finally found their groove! We have begun producing some excellent programs, that really reflect your hard work and dedication. The field produced shows, “Marcus Allen Tonight” and “No Such Thing” have begun airing, and have been met with very good reviews from those I’ve spoken to. Really great job everybody; keep up the hard work throughout the rest of the semester. Content. We have had a few issues surrounding the idea of “appropriate content” for ICTV. The line between what is acceptable and what isn’t always clear, but as producer you are the one's responsible for your crew’s actions. If something is inappropriate, you MUST censor it (either by “beeping it out” or removing it all together) or your show will be pulled out of the rotation immediately. If you’re unsure about something, please ask me for advice, and I’ll let you know whether or not it’s okay. And always remember “Redd’s Rule of Acceptable Words: if you do an internet search of the word, and it returns 10-out-of-10 ‘Adult’ themed sites, it’s probably not acceptable.” Show Proposals. We just finished up accepting proposals for next semester’s shows and Executive Staff positions. Believe it or not, we received over 25 applications for shows, with almost 10 new shows proposed. Unfortunately, Eloise and I were less than pleased when we found out that we will be loosing about two hours every Tuesday and Thursday next semester, in Studio B, due to class scheduling. This is going to cut down on the number of shows that we can have, but we still do optomistcally look forward to having a plethora of programming for the Fall 2003 season. Evaluations. I have tabulated everybody’s evaluations, and meetings to go over that information will be taking place in the upcoming month. Most of the reviews were very positive, some showed room for improvement, but everyone’s crew did an excellent job in providing useful information about your work on the shows. Please thank your crews for me, and look for one-on-one meeting times coming up soon. End of the Year. As you are all undoubtedly aware, the end of the semester is coming up quick, and with that the end of the Spring 2003 ICTV season. Don’t forget that even though we’re now on the home-stretch and the weather is getting warmer, we can’t quit just yet. Be prepared for the inevitable “I have too much work,” and the “I have to study for finals,” whining that will come from your crews. It’s tough to spend sunny days inside Park, believe me I know, but we all do have a commitment to this station, and that needs to remain a priority, especially for you producers. WE’VE BEEN CHALLENGED!!! In speaking with new WICB Station Manager, Mike Shaffer, there is an interest to have a Radio vs. TV Softball Game sometime in the upcoming weeks. If you are interested in playing, or know some crew members who might be interested (Ya’ Think You Know Sports, this one’s coming at you) let me know when you see me, and I’ll see if we can arrange something soon. And one last side note, please do me a favor next time you talk to your crews. After attending everyone’s show, I have received a number of comments that the question “You mean he’s not 40?” has come up. If you can let people know that I am in-fact a student, that would be great. Hope all is well, and I’ll be talking with everyone soon,

Lockers. As I mentioned in the last email, I was able to number all of the lockers in the Scene Shop, to help keep them organized. However, there are still a number of lockers that have unknown owners. I need to hear from producer’s who own these lockers by April 12th, or the locks will be cut, and the contents either thrown away, or put for public usage. The numbers are:
If this is your locker, let me know, and I’ll label it for you, that way there is no confusion.
